How to Lay Brick Pavers

Aug 13, 2012

brick pavers

Brick pavers are the ideal for driveways, walkways, and patios.

Start with a plan:
Using a pencil and paper draw out your design. Do a little research to make sure you get it right. Drainage is important, so you will need to lay the brick so it includes a slight slope.

Choose your materials:
Brick is available in a variety of colors. Choose a color that works well with your existing home structure.

Order your materials:
Measure the area of the space and add 5% to it to determine your square footage. If you will have to cut a lot of bricks for curves, instead of 5%, add 10%.

Prepare the area:
Measure the area again. Using wood stakes and string, mark the outline of your project. Dig out the area and remove any debris, tree roots, and rocks. The nature of your project will determine the depth you need to dig out. A driveway will need a deeper foundation than a patio or walkway. Check with the manufacturer for specific depth.

Build the foundation:
Lay a foundation of crushed stone and tamp it down with a tamper. Once your foundation is in place, add a layer of sand and smooth it out using a straight 2x4 board.

Lay your bricks:
It’s time to begin to lay the brick. Lay the brick pavers down on the sand but don’t kick them or press them in. Leave a 1/16" to 1/8" space between them and be sure you keep them level as you go. Finish off your project by sweeping sand over the pavers and allow the sand to fill the spaces between them. You can use a sealer if you wish to help protect the pavers.
